Frequently asked

Questions, answered.

No. Clean Break is a document preparation service. We are not attorneys, we do not offer legal advice, and we do not represent you in court. We help with the paperwork side of an uncontested divorce. If you need legal counsel, we'll always tell you so and recommend speaking with a licensed New York attorney.
It means you and your spouse agree on the divorce itself and on every related issue — property, debt, support, and (if applicable) custody. There's nothing for a judge to decide. If anything is in dispute, your divorce is contested and we're not the right service.
We're starting with Kings and Richmond counties because we know these courts inside and out. Filing procedures, clerks, calendars — they're all county-specific in New York. Doing two well is better than doing five poorly. Other boroughs may come later.
No. Everything we do happens over email. It's how we keep prices low, keep records clear, and avoid playing phone tag. You'll always have a written trail of what was said and decided.
With Self-File, we prepare every document you need and send it to you with clear instructions — but you take it to the courthouse yourself. With Full-File, we handle the filing for you and stay with the case until the court signs off. Concierge adds the final pickup of your signed Judgment of Divorce.
If your spouse won't cooperate, your divorce is contested and we can't help. We only handle filings where both parties are aligned and willing to sign the necessary paperwork.
No. Court filing fees in New York currently run about $335 total and are paid directly to the court. We pass these through at cost — we don't mark them up.
If your divorce becomes contested at any point — say, a disagreement emerges about property — we'll pause work and refund any unused portion of your fee. We'll also point you toward attorneys who can help you proceed.
Yes — see our à la carte options. Whether you just need someone to pick up your Judgment of Divorce or file documents you've already prepared, we can help with individual pieces.
